Farewell Glasslands

Glasslands will close it’s doors at the end of the year – the last of the 3 music venues to do so at South 1st/2nd and Kent Ave. I did not go to DBA or 285 Kent often but I went to Glasslands for years. I complained regularly to Rami about the lack of light and yet he still put me on his lists to come and shoot (you are an angel, Rami).

I’ve put together this post with a photo of every band that I shot there — not every band that I saw there because sometimes I just went to a show. I will start from the most recent and work my way back – it’s not perfect chronological order because I missed a few and had to go back and add them.

I hardly ever went to either 285 Kent and Death By Audio but they hosted amazing shows and really created a community for their patrons. I put together this small collection of the photos I shot there for the record as so many small venues closed this year.

Matmos, HARIBO at Issue Project Room

12/9/14: Still photos do this performance no justice. Matmos performed scenes “The Park” and “The Backyard” from the television opera Perfect Lives by Robert Ashley. They were accompanied by new collaborative video work by M.C. Schmidt and emerging Baltimore video artist and electronic musician Max Eilbacher. For “The Park,” MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel were joined by Davindar Singh on bansuri, Adam Markiewicz (of The Dreebs) on electric violin, Britton Powell on upright bass, Isabel Castellvi, Leigh Stuart, and Clarice Jensen on cellos. This was an amazing end to my 2014 shoots.

Actions speak louder than words.

z11.7.08 246*

I don’t really know how things in my like came to this. When did it become ok for a man to scream at me on the street (as well as cyber and physical stalking) or push my head back as far as it could go or jam his tongue, uninvited, into my mouth? By the way, these are all different men. I spend quite a lot of time around men and they are mostly just fine – respectful and friendly. Perhaps it has made me too relaxed because I never seen it coming. These are not the actions of friends and they are not because you are ‘rusty’ at affection – none of these are friendly or affectionate acts. They are abusive. So, I’d just like to say – keep you mean words, hands, etc. to yourselves.

*I don’t know the people in this photo – I don’t think their fight was serious.

Pallbearer, Tombs, Vattnet Viskar at St. Vitus 10/27/14

Just a few days after CMJ, I headed out to St. Vitus in Greeenpoint to shoot Pallbearer. I don’t normally shoot metal but after a horrid experience at an indie rock show with a photographer who verbally abused me for about 20 minutes I decided that I needed to be around people who treat each other decently. The crowd was pretty wonderful as were the bands.

DBA 24 hr. Drone Marathon

After CMJ, I walked over to DBA to catch some of the 24 hr. Drone Marathon. Excepter was on — which was kind of funny because I had shot them earlier that evening at Cameo. It was purely coincidental. I spent about half an hour at DBA and shot until my memory card ran out and the fog machine kicked in.

CMJ 2014 Wrap Up

All in all this was a really light CMJ for me which is just fine. #1 highlight – shooting with Jasper Coolidge to my left during Amanda X at Cake Shop. I’m going to try and list everyone that I saw along the way (and did not photograp). Sorry if I missed anyone. Good to see: Amanda, Chris, Abbey, Adela, Andrew, Marta, Dean, Will O., William H., Paul, Ryan M., Ebru, Mitchell, Maria P., Simon, Cici, Rachel, Sarah, Bryan, Jeremiah, Bill, Elizabeth, Jasper, Will M., Katie, Maia, Cameron, Dan, Jonas, Nora, Emma, Ryan Z., Brian, TorSten, Fred, BV, Billy, Maria S.,Christian, Melissa, Tim.

Thanks to QRO Mag and Impose for publishing my photos.

Here is one photo of each band that I shot (saw a bunch that I didn’t shoot as well).
