2014 Year End Review

2014 was a year of extreme highs and extreme lows. In May, my daughter graduated from Pharmacy school with the title of Doctor and I had to put my dear kitty Saqqara to sleep. In April, my friend Jiwon, went missing and was found after a month having ended her life (the 30 days of not knowing took a tremendous toll). In March, I attended SXSW for the first time which was amazing. I’ve shot bunches of shows and seen many small venues close. Crazy year. These photos are not a “Best Of” they are shows that I enjoyed something about.

5 Years of Fort Useless

There were a lot of DIY venue closures this year and most have been heavily covered by the local NYC music press but my home base DIY venue was Fort Useless. Not only did I shoot there, I had photo exhibits and curated many of the art shows. It is sorely missed by my little community of musicians and artists. Fort Useless continues to be a non-profit arts organization and endeavors to find new space. Thanks for all your hard work, Jeremiah.

I hope that there is a photo of everyone that frequented the Fort — my apologies if I missed anyone.

Farewell Glasslands

Glasslands will close it’s doors at the end of the year – the last of the 3 music venues to do so at South 1st/2nd and Kent Ave. I did not go to DBA or 285 Kent often but I went to Glasslands for years. I complained regularly to Rami about the lack of light and yet he still put me on his lists to come and shoot (you are an angel, Rami).

I’ve put together this post with a photo of every band that I shot there — not every band that I saw there because sometimes I just went to a show. I will start from the most recent and work my way back – it’s not perfect chronological order because I missed a few and had to go back and add them.

Matmos, HARIBO at Issue Project Room

12/9/14: Still photos do this performance no justice. Matmos performed scenes “The Park” and “The Backyard” from the television opera Perfect Lives by Robert Ashley. They were accompanied by new collaborative video work by M.C. Schmidt and emerging Baltimore video artist and electronic musician Max Eilbacher. For “The Park,” MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel were joined by Davindar Singh on bansuri, Adam Markiewicz (of The Dreebs) on electric violin, Britton Powell on upright bass, Isabel Castellvi, Leigh Stuart, and Clarice Jensen on cellos. This was an amazing end to my 2014 shoots.

Kick Assonance at KGB Bar

Every once in a while, my friend Kyle Erickson host a poetry reading. This last one at KGB Bar was beautiful.

Quiet, introverted poets…

KYLE ERICKSON is co-creator of the poetry series Kick Assonance, which has been noted by the Poetry Foundation, The Academy of American Poets, hailed as a “Critics’ Pick” by Time Out New York Magazine, and called “a notable New York Event” by The Rumpus. Kyle’s work can be read in This Land Press, Promethia, B’More Poetic, and on his blog, okieinthecity.com, which was heralded as a “Top 101 New York Blog.” His first book of poetry, Enduro’s Lament, was released in 2012.

STEVEN LEYVA was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. His poems have appeared in The Rumpus, The Light Ekphrastic, The Cobalt Review, and Little Patuxent Review. He is a Cave Canem fellow, the winner of the 2012 Cobalt Review Poetry Prize, editor of the Little Patuxent Review, and author of the chapbook Low Parish. Steven holds a MFA from the University of Baltimore, where he teaches in the undergraduate writing program.

TAFISHA A. EDWARDS is a Guyanese Canadian poet who lives and works in Washington D.C. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in journals such as Bodega Magazine, The Barely South Review, The Little Patuxent Review, Vinyl Poetry, and others. She is a Cave Canem fellow, a graduate of the University of Maryland’s Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House and has been awarded scholarships to The Juniper Summer Writing Institute and The Minnesota Northwoods Writers’ Conference.

GEORGE HACKETT was born in Scotland, and has lived in New York for the better part of 15 years. His poems appear in the first edition of PaxJournal, under a different byline, and he has won prizes at poetry festivals in Washington and Nevada.
