Northside 2013

As always, Northside Festival was a blast and it’s always a great weekend when you see all of your friends. my highlights were Swans at Warsaw, Solange at McCarren Park, Dead Stars and Clouder at Legion on Saturday night. There is nothing better than 2 rockin’ bands in a tiny, sweaty room filled with your friends.

Here is one shot of each band:

Swans – Here is the reason I wanted to shoot Northside this year – to get a photo of that kick.

The Neighbors at Julie Saul Gallery

mmphoto

Lst night, before heading out to shoot a show, I stopped into the Julie Saul Gallery to take a look at Arne Svenson’s photo exhibit, The Neighbors. I found the images quite intriguing and while voyeuristic, they did not feel that they were creepy. They were quite beautiful. The whole ‘violation of privacy’ is a valid and interesting discussion but on the whole I felt that the images were taken in a thoughtful manner that was not intended to expose the subjects as much as it was to expose NYC’s (or any city’s) apartment living – we live on top of each other and indeed have very little privacy – we perceive that we have much more than we actually do.

Oblivions, Ex-Cult at Southstreet Seaport (Beekman Beer Garden)

6/7/13. Rain sent the opening night of the Seaport shows over to the Beekman Beer Garden. Oblivions were fantastic but for me the night belonged to Ex-Cult. I had a great time shooting them. Towards the end of their set, Alec McIntyre, stopped on the stage. Since I was crouched down and leaning on the stage I didn’t get a photo of it but I felt the stage rock pressed against my body. One of those amazing moments.

Holly Miranda, Tim Mislock, William Carl Jr, Joseph Ruben at Glasslands

6/2/13. Headed out to Williamsburg on a Sunday night for Holly Miranda. Hadn’t seen her in a few years and was pretty excited to hear her sing live – she did not disappoint. You can here the set on NYC Taper. All the openers were good but I must say I loved that Joseph Ruben was accompanied by an un-miked string quartet.
