This was a pretty light CMJ year for me. I had a really good time though — different than just running from band to band without taking some moments to take in the festival.
Day 1:
Picked up my badge after work and ran into Chris and Amanda starting the CMJ “you can’t walk more than 10 feet without bumping into someone” phenomenon.
Headed out to Williamsburg for my first stop at Cameo.
Then headed over to Spike Hill
Somewhere between those sets, I heard from my friend, Jeremiah, and decided to meet up with him on the LES.
Then we headed over to Cake Shop for The Grates where this amazing thing happened:
Anyone who knows Jeremiah will surely appreciate this 🙂 It was nice to see Katie as well.
Ended the evening at The Delancey where Bryan met us.
Day 2:
Met up with Jenna who would become my CMJ buddy for the next several days.
We headed over to The Thompson Hotel to check out DOM…had to wait for these celebrity DJ’s to finish their turntable set…
Hint: Second guy from the left is Andy Rourke. Thanks for the tip Tearn
Then I left Jenna there and headed over to Pianos (she met me a little while later).
Went upstairs to the What Blog? Party (run by friends, Bryan, Nora and Chris).
They DO know how to fill a room
Then I headed downstairs for the Windish showcase but was only able to catch the end of this band:
Little Racer
Jenna and I then left Pianos to head out to Greenpoint…and the nightmare began. It was raining and getting to Greenpoint is a pain from the LES on public transportation. We decided to cab it and got one right away. He didn’t know where he was going to Jenna typed the address into his GPS several times while he drove in circles around the LES because he just couldn’t get us onto the bridge and yes–the meter was running. At the $10 mark while we were on Delancey and Ludlow, Jenna and I had enough and disembarked. We got into another cab and $8 later arrived at Europa.
Day 3:
Headed out early to Dan’s show at Cake Shop and made it to see Pamela’s band.
Headed over to Pianos and had a chat with my favorite PR lady, Grace. Ran into Chris B. and Eric as well. Later on saw Brad, Joe, and met Adam.
Took a break from shooting to have some fries and red wine with Jenna at Spitzer’s before my 7 hour stint in the MErcury Lounge. I was lucky enough to have Jess and Amanda shooting there that night as well – made the evening not only bearable but enjoyable
Day 4:
I stayed home for a little while so I could edit some photos and send them to CMJ (thanks for the badge!). Then headed out to Williamsburg. First stop, Spike Hill, then Public Assembly, Cameo and back and forth. It was good to hang again with Jenna, Bryan, Chris L, Chris B, Emma, Matt (from Breakthrough Radio) and always nice to see Simon.
Gauntlet Hair – really liked this band – stayed for the whole set.
We Are Augustines – my boys really brought it that night in Spike Hill and yes, Bill, it was old school. Felt like 5 years ago when Pela would play anywhere that would have them and they would burn the place down. I didn’t shoot anymore that night.
Day 5:
This was an exciting day as it was our first official CMJ show for Kidrockers.
Then I headed out to the Knitting Factory to hang with Jenna one more time before she headed back to Portland. Also ran into Genevieve.
Then I parted ways with Jenna and headed over to my final shoot for CMJ at Bowery Poetry Club
Big Ups — at this point I was really unable to deal with a mosh pit situation. These guys had a lot of energy though and a pinata filled with grilled cheese.
2nd shot because this is Billy Ficca — formerly of Television
Clutters – really liked this band too.
And, this was ridiculous, in the best possible way
