Gallery: CMJ 2011

This was a pretty light CMJ year for me. I had a really good time though — different than just running from band to band without taking some moments to take in the festival.

Day 1:
Picked up my badge after work and ran into Chris and Amanda starting the CMJ “you can’t walk more than 10 feet without bumping into someone” phenomenon.

Headed out to Williamsburg for my first stop at Cameo.

Then headed over to Spike Hill
peasantIMG_7256

Somewhere between those sets, I heard from my friend, Jeremiah, and decided to meet up with him on the LES.

Then we headed over to Cake Shop for The Grates where this amazing thing happened:

Anyone who knows Jeremiah will surely appreciate this 🙂 It was nice to see Katie as well.

Ended the evening at The Delancey where Bryan met us.

Day 2:

Met up with Jenna who would become my CMJ buddy for the next several days.

We headed over to The Thompson Hotel to check out DOM…had to wait for these celebrity DJ’s to finish their turntable set…

Then I left Jenna there and headed over to Pianos (she met me a little while later).

Went upstairs to the What Blog? Party (run by friends, Bryan, Nora and Chris).

Then I headed downstairs for the Windish showcase but was only able to catch the end of this band:

Jenna and I then left Pianos to head out to Greenpoint…and the nightmare began. It was raining and getting to Greenpoint is a pain from the LES on public transportation. We decided to cab it and got one right away. He didn’t know where he was going to Jenna typed the address into his GPS several times while he drove in circles around the LES because he just couldn’t get us onto the bridge and yes–the meter was running. At the $10 mark while we were on Delancey and Ludlow, Jenna and I had enough and disembarked. We got into another cab and $8 later arrived at Europa.

Day 3:

Headed out early to Dan’s show at Cake Shop and made it to see Pamela’s band.

Headed over to Pianos and had a chat with my favorite PR lady, Grace. Ran into Chris B. and Eric as well. Later on saw Brad, Joe, and met Adam.

Took a break from shooting to have some fries and red wine with Jenna at Spitzer’s before my 7 hour stint in the MErcury Lounge. I was lucky enough to have Jess and Amanda shooting there that night as well – made the evening not only bearable but enjoyable

Day 4:
I stayed home for a little while so I could edit some photos and send them to CMJ (thanks for the badge!). Then headed out to Williamsburg. First stop, Spike Hill, then Public Assembly, Cameo and back and forth. It was good to hang again with Jenna, Bryan, Chris L, Chris B, Emma, Matt (from Breakthrough Radio) and always nice to see Simon.

We Are Augustines – my boys really brought it that night in Spike Hill and yes, Bill, it was old school. Felt like 5 years ago when Pela would play anywhere that would have them and they would burn the place down. I didn’t shoot anymore that night.

Day 5:

This was an exciting day as it was our first official CMJ show for Kidrockers.

Gallery: Yuck, Porcelain Raft, The Babies

At The Music Hall of Williamsburg 1014/11. I had never seen Yuck before and they put on a hell of a performance. Porcelain Raft was a sweet interlude between The Babies and Yuck. The Babies were really good that night. It was good to see Dominick again so soon and a big THANK YOU to the guy that brought me back some water when he went to buy a beer.

Had such a great time at The Rosebuds show at Bowery Ballroom 10/12/11. Not only was the performance great, got to shoot it with Amanda, Dominick and Joshua. I love when we can create our own mini photo pit. There was a moment when I recalled how much fun it was to be onstage with them when they had done Kidrockers a few years ago – big smiles.

Opener, Mount Moriah was enjoyable as well.

CMJ 2011 – Preview

Yep, it’s time and here’s some bands that are playing this year’s CMJ that I have shot in the past. I’m sure that I have missed a few and I apologize. There’s no particular order because it took FOREVER for me to find these in my flickr account. I will start with my two favorites though, because, well, they are my favorites.

Gallery: O’Death, The Woes, Lady Lamb and The Beekeeper

October 8th at The Bell House. This was a really fun night. I met up with my good friend, Bryan, for pre-show tacos at Oaxaca. I’m really happy that he is back in Brooklyn because I will get to see him on a more regular basis. Mary was there as well fulfilling the role of merch girl for the bands.

O’Death, as always, was spectacular. I remember wandering into White Rabbit several years ago at a CMJ day party hosted by Gothanmist and being blown away by them. They still manage to do that to me all these years later.
odeathIMG_6033

I had never seen The Woes before and they put on a great performance — amazing musicianship.
thewoesIMG_5868

Lady Lamb opened the show and it was the first time I’ve seen her play since Bryan’s birthday party a few years ago in Portland. Ali is such a treat to see and such an unassuming lady.

Gallery: Austra, Light Asylum, Lydia

Wednesday night at Bowery Ballroom… This was an interesting show mostly because the audience in front changed for each band. The crowd was more casual for Lydia, very intense for Light Asylum and for Austra, the folks in the front adored them.

Gallery: Asobi Seksu, White Birds, Lonely Dear

Brooklyn Bowl is a very strange place to me. I always feel like I’ve left NY and entered into a Twin Peaks set. The idea that people are bowling and there is a stage, audience and a band playing all in the same room is very weird.

WhiteBirdsIMG_5096
I arrived around 7pm so I would have some time to catch up with James, Farzad, Mike and Chris, who are dear friends of mine. It’s always a treat for me to spend time with them and I don’t get to do it often enough. I also chatted with Matt who was on this tour with them and wrote about his experiences. It was always good to see Kelly, Madeline and Simon as well. I had good conversations with each of you.

They had a bunch of sound issues that plagued them through their set but the audience thoroughly enjoyed their performance.

AsobiSeksuIMG_5351
Asobi Seksu headlined the evening and had a stellar set. They used strobe lights quite a bit and so I abandoned shooting about a third way through their energetic performance.

LonelyDearIMG_4967
Lonely Dear opened the night with an interesting set full of looping and various sounds — including having the audience sustain notes during certain songs. I enjoyed being surrounded by all of that sound.

Gallery: Sideshow Goshko! 9/29/11

One of my favorite ladies, Leslie Goshko’s monthly storytelling show at KBG Bar.

goshkoIMG_4872

Music provided by the lovely Michelle-Leona Godin
goshkoIMG_4786

This Month:
goshkoIMG_4824
Nisse Greenberg explained why spending an afternoon at Golden Gate Park with a guy on acid, a lady with whiskers, a woman with one breast markedly larger than the other and total stranger is better than working for Wells Fargo (I think it was Wells Fargo – does it really matter? You get the point).

goshkoIMG_4860
Rob Latham regaled us with a multimedia story about how he got banned from CNN’s Talk Back show (while he was on his cake route).

goshkoIMG_4932
Leslie told us about her secret Asian heritage – which she doesn’t actually have and how a former school mate / stalker renamed her Ling, took random photos of her which wound up in a Calvinist toddler book, and gave her the gift of her severed head in a box (just a drawing of her head actually).

goshkoIMG_4958
Cammi Climaco explained why PS1 is the most terrifying place in New York (my interpretation as that place overwhelmed me during Warm-Up). actually, her story was about how depression can be lifted through a series of odd events such as having a friend who abandoned her pink and orange panties in the bathroom and hours later someone threw them out of the window and they just happened to land at their feet. It’s the little things people.
