Coma Cinema, Yellowbirds, Thieving Irons at Coco 66. Presented by The Wild Honey Pie (6/23/11). This was a really fun evening spending time with good friends Nate and Josh. Also met Nate’s parents and had great chats with Caithlin DeMarrais and Zambri. Many thanks to Eric and Lauren from The Wild Honey Pie.

10 Photos – January-June

These are some stand-out moments for me from the first 6 months of 2011.

wIMG_1902
Gold Streets at Fort Useless. I really love it when musicians break down the barrier and wander into the audience while playing. I’ve always enjoyed the aspect of art that opens people.

uIMG_3208
JPK let me get really close to his face and flash him with a bright light. He has so much patience….

vIMG_6435
Caithlin DeMarrais at Littlefield. It was such a pleasure to see Caithlin perform – one of my favorite voices.

uIMG_2526
We Are Augustines at B61. Bill always gives everything he has. This was an intense, warm and magnetic performance.

wyeoakIMG_5383
Wye Oak at Bowery Ballroom. It always makes me smile when I see images of Jen playing guitar and swinging her golden locks. She’s a fierce front woman that doesn’t lose her gentle nature.

yIMG_5823
Clouder at Fort Useless. This was insane. The photo is only the side of the venue near the stage because I, literally could not turn around (I risked being knocked in the back of the head with a mike stand). There have never been so many people in Fort Useless. It was awesome – and terrifying.

uIMG_5025
Lisa’s legs at Shea Stadium – yeow!!

uIMG_6732
Julia’s first birthday. This is my goddaughter – she’s kinda fearless.

dejectedIMG_9261
Mark, Justin and Sal on the bench outside of Spike Hill. I shot this on the last day of Northside Festival. Everyone was zonked – including me. I’m not sure how I was still standing at this point – I did spend quite some time sitting on that bench later on in the afternoon.

Nate (Thieving Irons) What a wonderful evening. It’s always a pleasure to see my dear friend Nate play. The new songs are gorgeous.

Musings

uIMG_1798

I guess it’s because I saw so many people this weekend that I’ve gotten to thinking about the nature of friendship. This past weekend I saw good friends, acquaintances, colleagues and people I’m not sure if I want to know. It’s odd how someone can move into a new category in an instant. Some who were colleagues I now count as friends and some that were acquaintances I may not want to know anymore.

It’s all about honesty for me – friendship – that is. Dishonesty cuts me like a knife. I can take just about anything – as most children of alcoholics there isn’t much that I haven’t seen so I have a great deal of tolerance for bad behavior. I know, to my core, that people can be cruel, make terrible mistakes and need forgiveness. How does one forgive the dishonest? It’s always been a tough one for me – it’s the crux of all relationships.

I’ve worked hard at being open and letting love flow through me and I guess I still need to work more – to stay open to those who are not/cannot/ will not be honest with me is hard. I want to shut them out and stay away from them yet there is a part of me that thinks it’s more important to let those people in – they need it more. Perhaps I am foolish. Time will tell.

Roots of Friendship Run Deep

uIMG_2043

As I sit here and listen to Rise Ye Sunken Ships by my dear friends, We Are Augustines and peruse the lyrics on their web site I can’t help but be brought back to a little over 6 years ago when I first met Bill and Eric. My friendship with Bill – which is probably the most important one of my life – began with him and me discussing his lyrics. They are visual — so I can see them and they have a tremendous emotional impact on me. Over the years, these are some that have stayed with me.

You trade places with the shadows on the floor – The Trouble with River Cities

Dashboard Jesus in a taxi cab, Never heard a word the driver said, Cause things only sink in so deeply, and its too late to be to late – Driftwood Days

You got a fragile face in a public place – Song Writes Itself

Well why don’t you leave? Cause it’s all I’ll ever have – No Doves…Just Pigeons

Hold it up to your eyes, See how it’s scratched on the inside – All In Time

The years are shrieking in my mind. And our ears are ringing all in time – All In Time

You got a small town stare like a signal flare – Waiting On the Stairs

Walked around a rainy city came up to a door and an old front porch that don’t know me anymore – Anna and the trail of glass

I ain’t gonna wait around for some pill to kick in, I’m gonna wait around for a pill to kick in – Headlong Into the Abyss

Don’t know my father’s last name. Its his blood that’s in my veins – Folsom Prison Blues

Episode three was you and me standing in the middle of some street. In a ghost town that we both found telling each other to leave – Episodes

But I can tell by your face we don’t fit in this place and you knew all along – Rooftops

And, yeah there’s an undertow but it ain’t got me – The Trouble with Rive Cities

I don’t wanna be another scar on the bar stool – East Los Angeles

I’ve got a pocket full of handshakes – Chapel Song

Hat in my hand, at the bottom of the ocean – Book of James

Northside Festival 2011 Wrap Up

Great weekend of music at this year’s Northside Festival. Here’s one shot of each band and my high and low-lights.

Highlights:

Seeing Sharon Van Etten play for 5000 people.

Spending some time with the B Brux, Syd, Max and Matt (especially Matt who I hung out with most of the day at McCarren on Saturday).

Seeing Project Jenny Project Jan on Sunday, I had forgotten how much fun it is to photograph Jeremy.

St. Cecilia’s Church – amazing venue for sound and the photos all look good.

The double rainbow after the downpour on Friday night at McCarren and the rain stopped just before we had to shoot.

The bouncer at Public Assembly that kept me safe from the mosh pit during the Iceage show (I love him). There were people all over Ryan Muir as he shot (he can take it though).

Lowlights:

Taking 4 trains home every night and 4 on the way on Saturday and Sunday. The MTA hates me.

Getting in trouble in St. Cecilia’s for using a flash that I didn’t have (it was another girl). Incidentally, no one ever said a word to her about it…

The downpour prior to the Beirut show – soaked is not fun (but it was kinda funny).

Not being able to stand-up anymore and missing Twin Sister at MHOW.

Thanks:

Jessica Amaya for being a good shooting buddy, giving me rain gear for my camea and driving me to Public Assembly after the Beirut show.

Amanda Hatfield, in addition to being one of the hardest working togs out there right now, she provided some comic relief in the rain and made a bee line path in the crowd to shoot Aaron Desser onstage with Sharon Van Etten (I followed her….).

Always good to see Dan (NYC Taper). PopTarts Sucked Toasted, Battering Room, A Heart Is A Spade, Punk Photo, I Rock I Roll, StereoactiveNYC, Ryspace, and Paper Garden Records. Nice bumping into Oberhofer, Skippy, Patrick and so many from the Fort Useless gang.

Many, many thanks to PrefixMag.com for the assignment.
